Perinatal Fitness Education - More Info Coming Soon

Perinatal fitness has many benefits for pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period.  According to James F Clapp, MD in his book Exercising Through Your Pregnancy women who were fit experienced the following:

  • A decrease of thirty-five percent in pain relief needed.

  • A decrease of seventy-five percent in maternal exhaustion.

  • A decrease of fifty percent in need to artificially rupture the membranes.

  • A fifty percent reduction in induction or stimulation of labor with pitocin.

  • A fifty percent decrease in intervention due to abnormalities in the fetal heart rate.

  • A fifty-five percent decrease in episiotomies.

  • A seventy-five percent decline in forceps or cesarean deliveries.

  • Shorter labors by about one third.

Accordingly, in his book he also stated the following effects to babies born to fit mothers:

  • The baby is considered "tougher" in fit women and more resilient to the stress of labor.
  • The placenta is healthier.
  • The fetus tolerates contractions better.
  • The caregiver’s concern regarding the baby’s condition was less than half compared to the control group.
  • A decrease in incidence of cord entanglement.
  • A lower incidence of meconium at birth.
  • Leaner, lower birth weight infants due to less fat and not due to growth retardation.
  • Mothers report their babies are easy to care for. Preliminary findings show babies who have "exercised" during pregnancy respond well to their environment. They are more able to soothe themselves and need less consoling.
  • The stimulation of sound and vibrations occurring during exercise may increase the fetal brain development.
  • At one year of age their mental, and physical performance was better as compared to "nonexercising" babies.
  • At five years of age they scored much higher on test of general intelligence and oral language skills.
  • They were less fat and weighed less than babies of non-exercising moms.
